Press Release

Date: Nov. 6, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

This evening, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 3684, the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, historic legislation that will modernize the nation's roads, bridges, public transit, and ports, while providing high-speed broadband and clean drinking water to communities throughout the country. The bill, championed by U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., will also make crucial investments to combat climate change, an existential threat to the planet, the country, and the Florida way of life. The Senate passed the bill with bipartisan support in August, and it will now be sent to President Biden to be signed into law.

The House also voted to advance H.R. 5376, the Build Back Better Act, bringing the bill one step closer to a full vote in the chamber.

"The bipartisan infrastructure bill will dramatically improve quality of life in Florida by providing residents with better roads and bridges, modern air and seaports, high-speed broadband, and clean water. I've been fighting for this historic legislation since it passed the Senate in August and am thrilled we are finally sending it to the President's desk to be signed into law," said Murphy. "I'm pleased we also moved the separate Build Back Better Act forward for consideration today. I'm committed to enacting a fiscally-disciplined bill that combats the existential threat of climate change, lowers the cost of prescription drugs without compromising innovation, and invests in working families."

The White House estimates that the bipartisan infrastructure bill will provide at least $13 billion to improve Florida highways like I-4; $1.2 billion to upgrade airports in Orlando, Sanford, and across the state; and $245 million to fix around 200 state bridges that are structurally deficient. At minimum, it will allocate $2.6 billion to modernize rail and bus systems like SunRail and Lynx; $1.6 billion to help ensure every community has clean drinking water; and $100 million to extend broadband to the 700,000 Floridians who lack it.

In addition, the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act:

Makes the largest-ever federal investment in public transit
Makes the largest federal investment in passenger rail since the creation of Amtrak
Makes the single-largest dedicated bridge investment since the construction of the interstate highway system
Makes the largest investment in clean drinking water and waste water infrastructure in American history, delivering clean water to millions of families
Ensures every American has access to reliable high-speed internet
Tackles the climate crisis by making the largest investment in clean energy transmission and electric vehicle infrastructure in history.
